Polyester Flag of the Denmark

The national flag of Denmark, the Dannebrog, is red with a white Scandinavian cross that extends to the edges of the flag; the vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side. The cross design of the Danish flag was subsequently adopted by the other Nordic countries: Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland. During the Danish-Norwegian personal union, the Dannebrog was also the flag of Norway and continued to be, with slight modifications, until Norway adopted its current flag in 1821. The Dannebrog is the oldest state flag in the world still in use, with the earliest undisputed source dating back to the 14th century.

Most of Germany's 16 states were formed after 1945. Throughout history the borders of Germany's political divisions have constantly changed, but after World War II, old provinces were rearranged to create new ones (ie Baden and Württemberg joined to form a new Bundesland called Baden-Württemberg). Even Berlin was soon split in half with the creation of East Germany in 1949. Only Bavaria, Saxony, and the city-states of Bremen and Hamburg predate the states created in 1945.

The first official flag of the Soviet Union was adopted in December of 1922 at the First Congress of Soviets of the USSR. It was agreed that the red banner was transformed from the symbol of the Party to the symbol of a state. It consisted of a red or scarlet field with states coat of arms'. It was ordered with the unusual 4 to 1 ratio in proportion and consisted of a red flag with the state coat of arms in the center. However, such a flag was never mass produced. It was replaced as the official flag by the more familiar "hammer and sickle" design during the third session of the CIK of the USSR on 12 November 1923.

Erin Go Bragh (also commonly spelled Erin Go Braugh) is the Anglicization of a Gaelic phrase used to express allegiance to Ireland, most often translated as "Ireland Forever". How it became Anglicized is not clear, but it was already in use as Erin Go Bragh by 1847 when a group of Irishmen serving in the United States Army during the U.S. - Mexican War deserted and joined the Mexican side. These soldiers known as Los San Patricios, or Saint Patrick's Battalion, flew as their standard a green flag with a harp on it, with the motto "Erin Go Bragh" underneath it.
